I don’t want to need reassurance about my beauty.  I’ve worked damn hard over the last year and a half to love myself, have confidence, and embrace who I am without comparing myself to others.  But the automatic assumption that I am not beautiful, attractive, good enough is a hard habit to break.

Maybe it's because my job is...um...challenging
I work at a public housing project.  It’s a high-rise with some added amenities such as a computer room and an exercise (since no one could ever fit this equipment in their shoe box-sized apartments).  Of course the exercise room is rarely used so I figured I’d give it a try.  Every evening when I get off work, I used the treadmill.  I always thought I’d hate using a treadmill...

One whole size
I am now comfortably one entire size smaller than I was at the beginning of the year, which was when I got serious about managing my PCOS. The last twelve or so months have been empowering.  I’m not as sad, angry, or self-conscious.  And it’s not about the weight loss.  In fact, that only came after I learned that I have value, which happened after standing up to some toxic people in...

My assistant is around 12 years older than me.  She is small and fit…and she hates her body. I still struggle, but I do love my body.  I’m forgetting what it’s like to hate myself.

I've lost 30 pounds.
I’m still conflicted about my weight loss. I want to make a shirt that says, “I’m not losing weight because I started eating better foods and eating less. I was already doing that. I’m losing weight because I finally found a doctor to treat my metabolic disorder.” But then everyone would say, “Every fat person has a ‘metabolic disorder,’...

My rheumatologist is aggressive about sending me for bariatric surgery.  It’s frustrating because my problem is not overeating.  And I know a lot of people say that, but I’ve been seeing a dietitian who has confirmed that my eating habits should result in weight loss.  There is an underlying issue, which my doctors almost universally ignore - I have PCOS with insulin resistance.  Last...

The Obesity Society's statement on weight... →
While the Obesity Society and American Obesity Association are engaged in the fight against obesity, they still recognize and advocate against weight discrimination.  And yeah, weight discrimination is a real thing and it’s works against the efforts of obesity/dietary specialists.  Obesity is about more than calorie counting and calorie burning.  It’s about self-worth, emotions, abuse...

Losing
I bought a pair of jeans a while back because I loved the style.  By the time I got around to wearing them, they were too tight to wear.  I’ve lost 5.5% of my weight since then (more on that at another time).  This morning I came across the jeans and they fit. I’m not losing weight because of vanity or social pressure.  I’m just can’t afford new clothes.

Yay for me for being obese (their lable, not mine) and having normal stats! blood pressure - 119/74 blood sugar - fasting is in the 70s, post meal is 100-120 cholesterol - good triglycerides - good (Sorry I don’t have numbers for the last two, but they have been checked and are fine.)

No reason to deny knee replacements for obese... →
I don’t understand how anyone could deny an obese patient a surgery that could increase their mobility.  It’s as if once a person is fat, everyone throws their hands up and says, “Sorry, you’re fat and you deserve to endure torturous pain until you die, which will, of course, be soon because you’re fat.”

The fattest states in the U.S. →
You know what?  I’m not even going to address the article.  My beef with this is the headless photo of a fat man.  I saw this story on the local news last night and it was nothing but stock footage of fat torsos walking around.  This is troubling because it dehumanizes fat people.  It suggests that we are simply amorphous blobs jiggling down the sidewalk.  It pushes the fact that we are...

Health
Ah, the joy of being schooled on a completely misleading concept. “Health at Every Size” It sounds nice doesn’t it?  I thought so too.  But I was wrong…oh so wrong.  When I first discovered HAES, I foolishly took it to mean making my health a priority regardless of my resulting size/weight/BMI.  I thought, “Hey, here’s something to embrace, to guide my life, to...

Here’s an idea: Stop focusing on size and weight and focus on health.  Be responsible when you eat and commit to physical activity.  The likely result will be something other than the government prescribed ideal BMI.  But you know what?  The government doesn’t know shit.

Woman with large cyst told to lose weight →
I have had many experiences with doctors and nurse practitioners who ignored my symptoms and simply told me to lose weight.  It’s as if health professionals can’t get past my weight or size to see that something else is going on.  My conditions often go unaddressed because doctors refuse to investigate my symptoms or even respect the diagnosis of a previous doctor.

How I learned to love my body
When I look in the mirror, I own what I see. I’m fat and I feel just fine saying that. My shift in perspective was born upon discovering the fat acceptance movement. The people look like me and they understand that differences in size are complex (genetic, physical, mental, cultural, etc.), but that all people deserve respect. Stop and consider how you think of fat people. Do you mock them? Do...
